Originally setup as the Loach Association of Great Britain we had people from around the world asking if they were still welcome, we thought about this and decided to change the name to the International Loach Association in 2009.

In the 80's and 90's apart from several species loaches weren't very popular at all, this was down to a few reasons:

  • A lack of information regarding care, behaviour and habitats.
  • lack of availability.
  • loaches were deemed unbreedable by a lot of aquarists/breeders
  • Primarily viewed as "snail control"

The aims of the International Loach Association have always remained the same and they are to raise awareness of loaches and help make information regarding the needs of loaches, be that identification, care and husbandry, habitats, new species and spawning reports freely available, to spread awareness of how "breedable" loaches actually are and dispel the myth that these wonderful fish are only good for "snail control".

In addition to this website, the International Loach association Facebook page, Loach Fanatics and Dojo loach Facebook groups we have books written by Mark Duffill available and Mark has given talks to clubs and organisations around the world regarding loaches.
